From Darkness to Light: A Conversation on Veteran Mental Health

The Welcome Home Forum hosted a powerful and timely discussion at Washington University School of Law on the emerging role of psychedelics in mental health treatment, particularly for veterans. The conversation brought together three expert voices: Ginger Nicol, M.D.; Larry Shapiro, Ph.D.; and Will Wisner, an Army veteran and advocate.

The event explored the science behind psychedelic-assisted therapy, its growing medical potential, and the urgent mental health challenges facing the veteran community. Will Wisner shared his deeply personal experience with psychedelic therapy, including the impact it had on processing trauma and rebuilding his life. Dr. Nicol and Dr. Shapiro provided an accessible overview of current research, clinical safeguards, and what the future of psychedelic medicine may look like as laws and public understanding continue to evolve.

This Forum also highlighted the broader mission behind these conversations: strengthening Missouri’s veteran community and ensuring that those who served have access to innovative, effective mental health resources.

The message was clear—service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off, and neither should the support veterans receive. The Welcome Home Forum remains committed to elevating these critical conversations and making Missouri a place where veterans can thrive.
